Leiden, Van der Aa 1706-08 [15,5 x 23,2 cm] Original copper engraving, uncolored as published. Rare and interesting map of eastern coast of North America from Pennsylvania across Virginia and Carolina towards Florida and the Western parts of the Caribbean including Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica and Hispaniola. The map illustrates the famous voyage of the Dickenson family, which left Jamaica around 1696 and got ship wrecked in a storm at the east coast of Florida. They stranded near 'Jupiter island', which now about 20 miles north of West Palm Beach. Their adventurous journey continued being captured by Indians in Florida, then being released from their captivity and their long voyage ended finally in Philadelphia. The long voyage is shown and engraved on the map. The famous Dutch publisher and mapmaker Pieter Van der Aa (1659 Leiden - 1733 Leiden) published 'during the period 1682-1733, an enormous quantity of printed matter' (Koeman). This map was actually published in the first edition of his travel books 'Naauwkeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en landreysen na Oost en West-Indien', in Leiden 1706-08. On the full sheet as published, however minor cut within the upper engraved borderline. The map was originally folded in this series, so that old folds are more or less slightly visible. Ohio and Lake Oswego are the western boundaries of this map. In the east it extends towards Long Island and Massachusetts. The map is equipped with many place names, rivers, mountains, lakes, etc. Published in Zatta's "Atlante Novissimo" as sheet V in his twelve-sheet map of the United States, which is based on John Mitchell's map of North America. The Italian edition by A. Zatta is rich in details and provides additional annotations, which are not found in the English edition of the Mitchell map of North America. In excellent condition. It provides detailed information on place names, little streets and routes, rivers, lakes, mountains. Further the states are divided up into its counties in outline color. The interesting map in vivid period hand color. At the lower centre fold and bottom marginal browning, affecting also slightly the engraved image of the map towards the border of Virginia, not really too disturbing. Verso a small mending. This antique map shows prominent in its centre the state of Pennsylvania with its neighboring states New York, Ohio, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Inside the map are many place names, rivers, lakes, mountains, railroads, etc. Many counties are named and finely hand colored in wash. A detailed map of this part of the Eastern United States by the famous 19th century mapmaker and cartographer Calvin Smith. This is one sheet (map no 7) of Calvin Smith's famous map of North America. Here is the rare version in lithograph present, published in Cassel in Germany. A splendid detailed map, showing nicely Pennsylvania and adjacenting parts. The map is highly detailed colored in outline and wash by counties and states. An interesting collector's piece. In very good condition.
