Benard, 1698 / 1739 [ca. 108 x 160 cm] Copper engraving, hand colored in outline when published. Large scarce scale wall map in 4 sheets, with printed top, bottom and side text panels. A highly decorative large wall map of the Americas with numerous decorative large vignettes: In the upper corners the famous beaver scene in Canada and the Cod Fishery in Newfoundland. These scenes were later used in Hermann Moll's map of North America. The other vignettes are showing inhabitants and Indians of Illinois, Louisiana, Virginia, Brazil, La Plata, Peru, Mexico and New Mexico. Also a mountain scene (probably Peru) and scenes with the Spanish at Rio de la Plata. Among these many fine engraved allegories we do find portraits of early explorers of the Americas among them Ferdinand Magellan, Christoph Columbus, Americo Vespucci, Francois Pissar and also two portraits of famous Indian kings: Artha Balipa and Monte-Zuma. Nicolas de Fer's wall map of the Americas appeared only in a few editions from 1698 onwards. The 1698 edition of de Fer's wall map is absolutely rare. Dahl calls it 'almost unknown' and neither Tooley or McLaughlin cite any edition prior to 1705. The very few editions up to 1739 differ mainly in the side panels with the descriptive text and in the top title and bottom text panel. Overall a good to very good and well preserved example of this large early 18th century printed wall map of the Americas. The map was originally laid down on linen (as usual). Former old tears, mendings, creases and small losses of paper at the surface extremely carefully restored and backed on modern Japan paper. Parts of the upper engraved title, due of loss in the printed area, partially carefully redrawn. Size, including the printed top, bottom and side text panels: 42 1/4 x 62 3/4 inches [ca. 108 x 160 cm]. Tooley, Mapping of America #70; Ed Dahl, 'The Original Beaver Map - de Fer's 1698 Wall Map of America", Map Collector #29, Dec 1984, pp. 22-26. [Stock No.:25799] Full description |
