Mitchell's map of Texas Mitchell, Samuel Augustus A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California with the Regions adjoining Compiled from the most recent authorities...1846
Philadelphia, 1846 [56,5 x 52,5 cm] Lithograph, period hand color in wash and outline when published. Fine example of Samuel Augustus Mitchell's famous map of Texas, Oregon, Upper California, Missouri Territory including the Indian Territory with parts of Kansas and Colorado. This is one of the first widely distributed maps showing Texas as a state in the United States, the map was originally published as a 'folded pocket map' with an occasional accompaniment of descriptive text. Samuel August Mitchell followed Arrowsmith's map of Texas of 1841, he also based his map on Fremont's detailed explorations in Oregon and California and Emory's map of Texas of 1844 and on work of western explorers as Lewis and Clark. The map enjoyed much popularity by the beginning of the United States's war with Mexico in 1846. 'The concept of Manifest Destiny proved a real boon to the commercial map making industry in America, and Mitchell's extensive credits of cartographic productions during this period mirrored public interest in the divisions of the continent. His maps were among the most popular and influential in distributing new knowledge about American expansion to a growing, eager audience.' (Martin & Martin #36; Maps of Texas) Original hand color in outline and wash when published. A few tiny, hardly visible wholes or breaks at the old folds, due that the map was originally published folded. Also the old folds are still slightly visible. The map has been flattened and skillfully rebacked with thin Japan paper. Full wide margins as published. A very nice well preserved example. Martin & Martin #36. [Stock No.:14013] Full description |
