Amsterdam, c. ( 1670) [46,5 x 54,5 cm] Copper-engraving, in original hand-colour (when published). A very good and sharp impression of this double hemisphere worldmap. The map is showing California as an Island (here with the sharp top). The map is ornated in the corners with very decorative mythological scenes. 'De Wit's map is one of the most attractive of its time. The brilliant scenes in the corners combine images of the four seasons, the elements, and the signs of the zodiac in a well balanced and naturalistic way' (Shirley p. 469). Amsterdam, 1670 [30,8 x 47,5 cm] Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash, published 1657 in a Dutch bible by Aertsz van Ravesteyn. A beautiful decorative world map in two hemispheres, equipped with two circular celestial diagrams. Further two celestial spheres are displayed on the eastern hemisphere and on the western hemisphere we find eleven lines of text on the discovery of the Americas and other recent voyages and circumnavigations. California is shown on the map as a peninsula. Parts of Australia and Van Diemen's Land are shown on the map, however not the northern coastline of Australia, which was discovered by Tasman's second voyage in 1644. The four corners of the map are equipped with beautiful engraved hand colored allegories on the four continents Europa, Asia, Africa and America. These allegories are equipped with landscapes, animal life and inhabitants. Printed on paper with good margins (44,5 x 51,5 cm). Minor creases at the lower centre fold, due to two older restored tears near the lower centre fold. Still in very good condition. Amsterdam, Ottens Renier & Josua 1745 [48,2 x 56,4 cm] Copper-engraving, decorative hand colored in outline and wash. A good example of this famous Dutch double hemisphere maritime world map, published first by Frederick de Wit in his sea atlas. This is the third state published 1745 by Renier & Josua Ottens. This highly decorative map is illustrated in the four corners with the following scenes: Fire - Air - Earth - Water. In the upper left corner Pluto is carrying off a female, while a battle is taking place in the background, in the upper right corner a scene of the heavens with Zeus and Hera, the bottom corners are showing a rural scene bringing in the harvest and a maritime view with a spouting whale. It shows California as an island and has outlines for Australia and New Zealand. Further it has amendments with engraved routes of earlier explorations showing the travels of Tasman, Chevalier de Chaummont and the routes of Magellan and de le Maire. There are numerous additions of islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. The plate is in the eastern hemisphere in Southeast Asia partly worn and the printing in that region slightly blurred. A few older tiny tears or marginal mendings, mostly in the area of the centre fold and just above the allegory of the fire. A remarkable highly decorative map still in good to very good condition.
