    Northern heaven
    Cellarius, Andreas

Haemisphaerium Stellatum Borealecum Subiecto Haemisphaerio Terrestri.

    Amsterdam, J. Janssonius 1660 [43 x 51,5 cm]
Original copper engraving, finely hand colored, in the period when published. This highly decorative celestial chart, which is showing the astronomical constellations of the Northern Sky is engraved over a hidden engraved outline map showing 'Nova Brittania' (North America), the North Pole, Europe and the Tartary with parts of China and Southeast Asia. The decorative map impresses by the fine allegoric engraved figures (angels playing music) and the highly detailed engravings in the actual northern heaven showing the various signs of the zodiac. The chart was published in Amsterdam in Andreas Cellarius's 'Harmonia Macrocosmica seu Atlas Universalis et Novus' in 1660. This double page plate is probably one of the most decorative plates published in this rare series of celestial charts. The stars and the cartouches partly heightened in gold.
In excellent condition. A strong impression with full margins, as published. Koeman HM 26:1
