Roman Empire Ortelius, Abraham Romani Imperii Imago. Antwerp, Christopher Platin 1598 [34,9 x 49,8 cm] Original copper engraving, published 1598 in a French edition of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Finely hand colored in wash and outline by a later hand. Beautiful map of the Roman empire, decorative and richly ornated with several cartouches. In the upper middle we find the title cartouche, in the upper right and left corners cartouches showing Roman kings. The bottom shows three cartouches, in the lower left corner and lower middle two more text cartouches concerning Roman history, in the lower right corner a cartouche with a genealogical tree of Roman kings. In excellent condition. Full margins as published. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. The map is ornated with a small decorative title cartouche on the upper left side. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views. A very skillfull minor mending in the area of the lower centerfold. This map by Abraham Ortelius was published from 1584 onwards in his atlases. The difference to the map published to the maps before 1584 is, that the Roman capitals "AFRICAE PARS" are after 1584 engraved in cursive letters. In very good condition. Antwerp, Balthasar Moretus 1624 [34,4 x 49,3 cm] Original copper engraving, published 1624 in the famous historical Atlas "Parergon" (Latin text-edition) by Abraham Ortelius. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. In the top centre we find a decorative title cartouche ornated with animals, in the lower left corner a text cartouche. The map shows three insets, one in the upper right corner (map of Europe), two in the lower left corner (Central Greece, sea of Marmara). In excellent condition. Koe. This antique historical map of Europe shows the imperium of Charlemagne. The map is very detailed engraved with many small place names, rivers, mountains, woods, etc. Political borders are colored in period outline colors. In the upper right corner we find a floral ornated title cartouche with a coat of arms. Further is a beautiful compass rose in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea is ornated with several sailing ships. In very good to excellent condition. A minor small brown spot within the Low Countries. Europe de Wit, Frederick Nova Europae Descriptio Auct. F. de Wit. Amsterdam, Frederic de Wit, 1680 [44,5 x 55,7 cm] Copper-engraving, handcolored by a later hand in outline and wash. In the lower right corner a figurative title cartouche. The map is richly ornated by cityviews and costumes at three sides. Frederic de Wit's continent map of Europe, ornated in the upper margin with city views of European capitals: Rom, Amsterdam, Paris, London, Sevilla and Prag. On each of both sides we find 4 scenes of European emperors. The map itsself has engraved borders and names many cities and towns. The map has been handcolored by a later hand, reverse we find skillfull restaurations in the area of the center and around the lower corners. However still a good and acceptable copy of this unusual map. Europe Weigel, Christoph Nova Europae Tabula Nuernberg, C. Weigel, 1719. [28 x 35 cm] Copper-engraving, handcolored in outline and wash, when published. A strong and fine impression of Weigel's map of Europe, ornated with a large decorative allegoric title cartouche. The cartographer Christoph Weigel worked around 1719 in Nuernberg and his maps are showing the typical style of this period in mapmaking in Southern German. He worked very close as with Johann B. Homann in Nuernberg. All his maps were handcolored in outline and decorative body color immediatelly in his printing house, after they were printed. In excellent condition. Weigel. 1719 [32,2 x 40,6 cm] Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and body colour, when published. This historic map shows Europe with its neighbouring countries. Sarmatia, Mauritania, Libya and Fortunatae Insulae (Canary Islands). As well the map is equipped with many place names of antique city places, as well the countries are divided up into its regions and many historic names of those regions and provinces are engraved. In the upper left corner a circular inset with a map of the 'New World' Americas. The cartographer Christoph Weigel worked around 1719 in Nuernberg and his maps are showing the typical style of this period in mapmaking in Southern German. He worked very close as with Johann B. Homann in Nuernberg. All his maps were hand colored in outline and decorative body color immediately in his printing house, after they were printed. In very excellent condition. This antique map shows Europe with his neighboring counties. In the upper left side we find the title cartouche. The map is very detailed engraved with many place names, mountains, woods, rivers, etc. Published in Hermann Moll's 'Atlas Minor' 1736 in London. The geographer Hermann Moll came originally from the Netherlands and worked in London in the beginning for Moses Pitt. Later he became one of the important map publishers in England. The atlases, which he published were widely well known. He engraved as well maps for other English publishers (John Seller, etc.) . In excellent condition. This antique map shows the historical Europe with the extended Roman Empire towards the Middle East. The map is very detailed engraved with many place names, rivers, mountains and names of the antique regions. In the upper right corner we find the title cartouche. At the lower left corner we see a compass rose with a small mileage scale. The geographer Hermann Moll came originally from the Netherlands and worked in London in the beginning for Moses Pitt. Later he became one of the important map publishers in England. The atlases, which he published were widely well known. He engraved as well maps for other English publishers (John Seller, etc.) . In very good to excellent condition. With traces of old folds, the map was originally folded, hardly visible. This antique map shows Europe divided up into its countries and the adjacenting regions Russia, the Middle East and North Africa. The map is accurately detailed engraved and shows many place names, rivers, mountains, lakes etc. In the upper left corner we find the large allegoric title cartouche with a detailed title and dedication to the famous French cartographer Guillaume De L'Isle, on whom the cartographic information of this map is based. This is the revised edition 1769, formerly published by Ph. Buache in 1745. In the upper right corner we find an inset map, which shows a part of Russia and Nova Zembla. A small circular inset with an text advertisement on the Russian Empire is engraved near the Caspian Sea. In very good to excellent condition. The upper margin cut close to the engraved border line, as published in the atlas.
