Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. This map is ornated with a title cartouche on the lower left side, two further text cartouches in the upper right corner and on lower right side. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views. A very good example in excellent condition. Historical map of Dacia covering mainly the area of the Walachei, Bulgaria and Rumania. Amsterdam, I.E. Cloppenburgh, 1630 . [18,8 x 25,8 cm] Original copper engraving, published in the first Cloppenburgh edition of Gerhard Mercator's "Atlas Minor" in 1630, verso French text. A strong and dark impression, full margins as published. Detailed map showing Walachei, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania. This decorative map by Mercator provides a lot of information on place names, rivers and mountains in that area. The map extends towards the Black Sea with the mouth of the river Danube This is the first so-called Cloppenburgh editions which was a competive edition with new engraved maps in a larger format. Most of the maps were engraved by Pieter van den Keere. The Cloppenburg edition was continued for a couple of years but seems to have been suppressed after 1636 ... (Koeman Atlantes Neerlandici).
