Lyon, Servet 1535 [37,3 x 50,3 cm] Early woodcut map of Ceylon, published in the Ptolemy edition by M. Servet, showing Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and the Indian Ocean. The paper with watermark anchor in a circle. The cartographic woodblock was published here in 1535 by Michael Trechsel in Lyon and contained text by Michael Servetus. The paper with watermark anchor in a circle. The map is illustrated on the reverse side with descriptive text in Latin and a decorative woodblock border, probably by Hans Holbein, who was working at that time in Basle. The map its self shows Sri Lanka, named on the map with its old name 'Tabrobana'. Sri Lanka is quite accurate shown on this early woodcut map, place names are given in Latin, river courses are engraved, mountain chains as well. Neighboring islands in the Indian Ocean and the southern tip of India are shown on the map. A strong and even impression on the full paper sheet as published. Galignani, P & F., Padua 1621 [ca. 31 x 21 (text sheet) cm] Fine copper-engraved map, printed into the full text page, published in 'Geografia ... Universale de la Terra', which was translated by Cernoti and published 1621 in Padua. Decorative map of Sri Lanka (Ceylon or Taprobana) ornated with an elephant and a renaisance text cartouche. Many place place names and some rivers are shown on the map. As well a number of small island, located around Sri Lanka, are engraved. An interesting collector's piece. The map provides a lot of information on place names, also streets mostly along the coast, but all over the island the map shows the divisions and names of all the various political districts of Sri Lanka.
