This map was published 1588 in the first Spanish edition of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Finely hand colored in wash and outline, when published. Three maps on one double page: Peru, Florida and Guastecan. The map of Florida is was of the earliest cartographic examples showing Florida and the gulf of Mexico. The map is based on early Spanish cartographical sources by Geronimo de Chaves. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views, moreover the map is ornated with ships and animals and small renaissance title cartouches. In very good to excellent condition. This is the first so-called Cloppenburgh editions which was a competive edition with new engraved maps in a larger format. Most of the maps were engraved by Pieter van den Keere. The Cloppenburgh edition was continued for a couple of years but seems to have been suppressed after 1636 ... . This is another Cloppenburgh edition, now with Latin text. The map shows prominently in the centre Cuba, Haiti, the Bahamas and Florida, which is here marked in the map as the province 'Tegesta'. With many engraved place names, rivers and mountains. Also islands, sand banks and reefs are shown on the map. Also Central America is nicely and detailed shown with Yucatan, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Terra Firmae. In the right upper corner is a beautiful colored title cartouche held by two putties. At the top a Dutch engraved title is present with a mileage scale and table of explanations. Leiden, Van der Aa 1706-08 [15,5 x 23,2 cm] Original copper engraving, uncolored as published. Rare and interesting map of eastern coast of North America from Pennsylvania across Virginia and Carolina towards Florida and the Western parts of the Caribbean including Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica and Hispaniola. The map illustrates the famous voyage of the Dickenson family, which left Jamaica around 1696 and got ship wrecked in a storm at the east coast of Florida. They stranded near 'Jupiter island', which now about 20 miles north of West Palm Beach. Their adventurous journey continued being captured by Indians in Florida, then being released from their captivity and their long voyage ended finally in Philadelphia. The long voyage is shown and engraved on the map. The famous Dutch publisher and mapmaker Pieter Van der Aa (1659 Leiden - 1733 Leiden) published 'during the period 1682-1733, an enormous quantity of printed matter' (Koeman). This map was actually published in the first edition of his travel books 'Naauwkeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en landreysen na Oost en West-Indien', in Leiden 1706-08. On the full sheet as published, however minor cut within the upper engraved borderline. The map was originally folded in this series, so that old folds are more or less slightly visible. Weimar, Geograph. Institut 1866 [55,8 x 63,2 cm] Steel engraving, hand colored in outline when published. This large and decorative map shows detailed Mexico and Central America. The map is equipped with many small place names, rivers, lakes, the gulf of Mexico and the Pacific coast. A interesting map for the Southwest US and the Southeast US with Florida. In the lower left corner we find two inset maps. One shows the railway project of Tehuantepec and the other a inset map of San Salvador and Honduras. Along the the countries of Central America (Mexico, Guatemala, S. Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica) tables with abbreviations of the names of mountains in these countries. At bottom of the map we find detailed explanations for the map and a mileage scale. This map is the revised edition engraved by Kratz published 1866 in Weimar. Still in very good condition.
