Nurnberg, Koberger 1493 [36,5 x 53 cm] Original woodcut from the famous 'Nurnberg Chronicle', printed in Nürnberg, in December 1493. German text edition. This view of Cologne is one of the earliest obtainable authentic city views, published only a few years before 1500. This plate was exactly published and printed in December 1493 in Nurnberg at Koberger. The 'Nurnberg Chronicle' was the earliest and most richly illustrated incunabula and description of the world, which was as well illustrated with a small number of authentic double page city views. This very beautiful decorative map shows us a bird's eye view of the city of Aachen. A very detailed view of the city of Aachen, ornated with inhabitants in the foreground. We look at the city with its fortifications, the walls and towers, many accurate engraved small houses, churches, places, etc. It shows as well the surrounding with a wonderful landscape and nearby fields. In the lower right corner we see the large allegoric title cartouche. In the upper left and right corners are the coat of arms of Aachen. This view of Aachen by Braun and Hogenberg was published from around 1578 onwards, it replaced the earlier bird's eye view of Aachen by Braun & Hogenberg, engraved after the sketch by Hendrick Steenwyck (1576).
