Nuernberg, Chr. Weigel. 1719 [30,7 x 37,5 cm] Copper engraving, hand colored in outline when published. This map by Christopher Weigel is depicting the 'Ancient Germany' after the famous antique geographer Claudius Ptolemy. It shows 'Germania' with its ancient place names in Latin language. As the southern boundary the river Danube was used. At the lower right corner we find a wonderful pictorial engraving showing the ancient geographer Claudius Ptolemy in a classical landscape working with cartographic instruments. The cartographer Christoph Weigel worked around 1719 in Nuernberg and his maps are showing the typical style of this period in mapmaking in Southern German. He worked very close as with Johann B. The map is decorative arranged with two figurative allegoric cartouches. The title cartouche is in the left lower corner with highly decorative allegories on the rivers and to water and in the upper left corner we find dedication text by Friedrich Heinrich Zollmann. The map itself provides a very detailed detailed river system with their names. Further the larger areas, from where the rivers sources are coming from are various hand colored in wash.
