Münster, Sebastian Terra Sancta XXIII Nova Tabula.
Basel, H. Petri 1552 [27,5 x 37,1 cm] Woodcut map, finely hand colored in wash by a later hand. Verso illustrated with a decorative colored woodcut illustration.Woodcut map, finely hand colored in wash by a later hand. Verso illustrated with a decorative colored woodcut illustration. A highly decorative woodcut map by famous mapmaker Sebastian Münster published in his Ptolemy edition 1552 in Basel at Heinrich Petri. The decorative woodcut bordures verso were probably cut by the famous 16th century woodcutter Hans Holbein. Nearly none of the captivating woodcut borders verso are repeating, they are mainly shaped by allegoric scenes, coat of arms or wonderful initials. A rare and early mid 16th century woodcut map showing a modern Ptolemy map of the Holy Land. The map extends from Sidon in the South with the neighboring Lebanon with Beirut towards Gaza and Idumaema in the North. The map itself shows nearly all classical Biblical sites, ancient place names and the names of the various tribes. The interesting woodcut map has still miniature city views as engraved woodcut silhouettes, also rivers and mountain chains are schematic shown. Further a charming decorative scene with rural people, livestock, dear and camels. An interesting and beautiful map for the collector of rare maps of Palestine and the Holy Land. In the upper right corner with a large table listing ancient and modern place names. An interesting and highly decorative map for the collector of rare maps of the Holy Land. In excellent condition.
