The title of the map appears in the centre, the upper part of the map is a large map of Candia (Crete), already with many names of villages and other small places. Below are ten more small insets of Greek islands in the Archipelago (Metellino, Cerigo, Scarpanto, Nicsia, Santorini, Milos, Stalimente, Negroponte, Rhodos and Scios).

Facinating decorative map, published in Ortelius' 'Parergon', showing the Peregrinations of St. Paul in the eastern Mediterranean. This highly decorative map is ornated with two cartouches, on top in the middle we find the title cartouche, framed by two coloured historical scenes in oval, at the bottom one cartouche with 3 lines of text from the Bible (2. Corinth. 5). The map is also ornated with two ships and a seamonster.
A very good example in excellent condition. Broe. 181 State 1 of 2 (before stippling was added around sea names).

Original copper-engraving, handcolored in wash, published 1617 in the townbook 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Braun and Hogenberg. The entire series of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' comprised six volumes and was published and printed from 1572 towards 1619. Decorative panoramic city view of Chios in the Mediterranean Sea. This decorative view of the city of Chios in the Aegaein sea is ornated with a scene of firing sailing ships in the harbor. The city is very well shown with its fortifications, the wind mills along the coast and the surrounding decorative landscape. Ornated with a decorative title cartouche in the lower right corner.

Copper engraving, finely hand colored. This historic city view of Malta shows a panoramic view towards the old fortified town with its walls and its nearby surrounding. Houses, towers, churches, city walls etc. are detailed shown. This city view is decorative ornated with a renaissance title cartouche. Further this antique print is highly decorative engraved and some of the town views from 'Nova et Accurata Italiae ...' are engraved after earlier city views from the famous series 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Braun & Hogenberg. Also they are occasionally ornated with rural figures in the foreground, a coat of arms, ships or a decorative landscape. This antique print is finely hand colored in wash and outline. Printed on good paper on the full sheet as published. In 1626 Jodocus Jr. published 'Nova et Accurata Italiae Hodiernae Descriptio', a description of Italy with 31 small maps (16 x 23 cm) and 66 town views interspersed between the pages. (Koeman, Atlantes Neerlandici Vol. I Pag.35)

The islands and coastlines are decorative engraved, many towns and villages are named, as well anchor places and the depth of the water is marked. An interesting map for the collector of maps and charts of Corsica and the Mediterranean.

Steel engraving, hand colored in outline when published. A very interested antique map with three inset maps relating to the Mediterranean Sea. The first one shows detailed the Balearic Islands with many small place names along the coast. The islands are Menorca, Mallorca and Ibiza. The inset map print shows La Valetta, the capital of the island Malta. In the upper left corner we find the explanation of this map. On the third inset map, we see the islands Corsica and Sardinia. These maps are equipped with many place names along the coast, rivers and small place names and villages. In the upper right corner towards Italy with the island Elba.
In excellent condition.

Ornated at the bottom with several inset maps: Canary Islands, Nil Delta, Holy Land A highly detailed map providing a lot of information on small villages and place names, rivers, lakes, mountains, etc. In the right corner is a small mileage scale.
In very good condition. A few marginal spots at the lower blank margin, not affecting the image.
