Cologne 1598 [33,5 x 47,8 cm] Hand colored copper engraving, published in volume V of the town book 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg. This decorative print shows the towns Bornos and Zahara with a beautiful landscape. The map is divided up in three parts. At the top we look towards the town Bornos with mountains in the background. In the foreground we see peoples, which are going towards the town. The two views at the bottom show us the town Zahara seen from the east and from the west. Ornated with a highly decorative engraved title cartouche with Spanish noblemen and coats of arms. Further the map is ornated with two compass roses and the pascaart is orientated North to the left. Joan Jansson's sea-atlas can be regarded as the first Dutch sea atlas in this period, which covered the entire world. Full margins as published. Villa Nova, Faro, Tavilla and Aimonte are prominently displayed. Ornated with a large decorative handcoloured title cartouche in the upper center, above there is a large milage scale to convert Dutch, Spanish, English & French leagues to degrees. Further on the chart is ornated with two compass roses and a ship. A strong impression in good to very good condition. As published on the full sheet. There are very skillfully mended splits along the centerfold and two printer's creases at the right and left side, with as well mended minor splits. Amsterdam, P. Mortier. 1705 [59 x 87 cm] Copper engraving, uncolored as published. A fine example of a strong impression of this large map. This issue is published and printed at Pierre Mortier in Amsterdam 1705. The map was printed from two plates. This decorative sea chart is orientated with the north to the left and is equipped with engraved lines for navigation and a compass rose. It shows the coast from Galicia all along Portugal towards Andalusia and Gibraltar. With many engraved place names along the coasts, anchor places and engraved depths in the water. Cities and larger towns are engraved as miniature city views. At the top the map is equipped with two inset maps: the port of Lisboa and the bay of Cadiz. Hubert Jaillot's maps can be treated as a masterpiece of the French baroque cartography in the 17th century. It took Nicolaus Sanson and Hubert Jaillot a period of about fifteen years to complete this enormous work (c. 1681-96). The atlas was dedicated to Ludwig XIV. A fine example in excellent condition.
