The town books by Braun & Hogenberg are probably the most important series of early city views ever published. A famous plate from the Spanish plates of Braun & Hogenberg's 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum'. The engraving of Conil shows fishermen in the foreground doing their daily work - the view of Jerez de la Frontera with rural inhabitants in the foreground. Amsterdam, Joan. Janssonius. 1632 [46,2 x 56,2 cm] Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash. A nice decorative colored example of this rare map showing the kingdom of Spain around 1632. This highly decorative is ornated with town views and costumes of the different Spanish provinces. Among the city views we find the monastery S. Laurencius (Escorial, Monserrat, Lisboa, Sivilia, Valla-Dolid, Toledo, Mons, S. Adriani (Biscaya), Burgos, Granada, Cisterna, Granatensis, Barcelona and a city view of Madrid below the floral ornated title cartouche. Further the map is ornated with sea monsters, sailing ships and a compass rose. In the upper border we find in the center a portrait of Philipp III. King of Spain. This is the 3rd of 6 states of Pieter van den Keere's map 'Nova Hispaniae Descriptio', which was published first by van den Keere in 1616 and was then published from 1626 to 1659 in six different states. The imprint by Janssonius appeared from the 2nd state 1626 onwards. According to G. Schilder (Cartographica Monumenta ... ) the 3rd state is present in three public collections and one private collection. In very good condition. The upper engraved borders cut close to the engraved views and skillfully remargined and redrawn. The centre fold verso strengthened. The other three margins and borders in perfect condition. Interesting and detailed map of 'Antique Spain' with Portugal and the Balearic Islands by the French cartographer Nicolaus Sanson d'Abbeville. The map provides us a lot of information of the various place names of cities and small towns, the rivers, mountains and also engraved borders of the various Spanish provinces. The map impresses with the geographic exactness, which is typical for the French cartographer Nicolaus Sanson. In the decorative cartouche, which is in shape of a seashell, we find the altered date '1704', which is a relatively late edition for maps by N. Sanson. The map is probably published in a French composit atlas around this date. In very good condition, a slightly creasing in the lower part of the centrefold with minor tiny spots. Nuernberg, Homann, J. B. 1730 [48,8 x 57,7 cm] Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash when published. This decorative map and prospect of Gibraltar is at all equipped with seven surrounding inset maps and views of this region. Among them are the bay of Cadiz, Seuta, view of Cadiz, prospect of Gibraltar, Tanger, bird`s eye view of Gibraltar and the Island of Minorca with the port of Maon. Still in acceptable to good condition. The map is verso mended at the lower half of the centre fold (with loss of engraved image), as well with a large mended tear extending from the compass rose in the centre towards Cadiz.
