Nurnberg, Koberger 1493 [ca. 37,5 x 52,2 cm] Original woodcut from the famous "Nurnberg Chronicle", printed in Nuernberg, in December 1493. Fully hand colored city view of Constantinoples, as well the initials in text rubricated throughout. German text edition. This view of Constantinoples is one of the earliest obtainable authentic city views, published only a few years before 1500. This plate was exactly published and printed in December 1493 in Nurnberg at Anton Koberger. The "Nurnberg Chronicle" was the earliest and most richly illustrated incunabula and description of the world, which was as well illustrated with a small number of authentic double page city views. Antwerp, Platin 1598 [32,1 x 49,2 cm] Original copper engraving, published 1598 in a French text edition of the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. The map shows three maps on one double page, each of them with a title cartouche. Asia minor is shown with the east to the north oriented with Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean. The other small map of Egypt is showing mainly the Nile delta with the neighbouring area. The third map shows the surroundings of Tunis (Carthago). Villages and towns are shown as miniature views. Moreover the maps are ornated with ships. Abraham Ortelius received the cartographic sources for those maps by Gastaldi and Forlani, 1564, for Egypt by Forlani 1566 and Carthago after an Italian one sheet source dated 1535 (Broe. 174).
