    Antwerp, Balthasar Moretus 1624. [37,5 x 48 cm]
    Original copper engraving, published 1624 in the famous historical Atlas "Parergon" (Latin text-edition) by Abraham Ortelius. The map is ornated with two cartouches, on the right the title cartouche, with the "privilegium" and a small cartouche in the upper left corner. Ortelius published this map from 1590 onwards in his atlases. He based this map on the basis of the information from Mercator's South-East Europe atlas, which appeared in 1589 and the ancient knowledge from Plinius, Ovidius, Strabo, Apollonius, Procopius and Appianus. The Black Sea is very decorative and accurate shown, as well the peninsula 'Crimea' is prominently engraved, the Ukraine is shown as well. Many historical place names, rivers, mountains, etc. are engraved.

    Woodcut published 1628 in the "Cosmographia" by Sebastian Muenster. Early woodcut map published in the 1628 edition of Sebastian Muenster's 'Cosmography'. A very clear impression of this woodcut. This early 17th century map depicts the Black Sea, Armenia and a part of the Caspian Sea in the North it shows the Ucraine into Russia towards 'Castrom' and 'Novogardia'. The 'Cosmography' by Sebastian Muenster was published from 1545 to 1628 onwards in several languages. It was one of the most famous atlases and townbooks after the famous Nurnberg Chronicle. Muenster's 'Cosmography' was extended from edition to edition and is variing in many woodcut illustrations. Many of the woodcuts were cut by David Kandel.
