Description: Original copper engraving, hand colored when published. First Spanish text edition 1588. This map was published 1588 in the first Spanish edition of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Finely hand colored in wash and outline, when published. Three maps on one double page: Peru, Florida and Guastecan. The map of Florida is was of the earliest cartographic examples showing Florida and the gulf of Mexico. The map is based on early Spanish cartographical sources by Geronimo de Chaves. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views, moreover the map is ornated with ships and animals and small renaissance title cartouches. Notes: In very good to excellent condition.
