Cartographer: Ortelius, Abraham Published: Antwerp, Juan Baptist Vrients Date: 1612 Size: [36,9 x 50,4 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / later handcolour Description: Original copper engraving, published 1612 in the famous Vrients-edition of the "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum". Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. In the upper right corner we find a decorative title cartouche with allegories, on the upper left side a decorative cartouche with scale bars. The lower left corner shows a sea monster attacking a ship. A very good example in excellent condition. This map was published in the editions of the 'Theatrum Orbis ...' from 1584 onwards up to 1612 and it is based on the cartographical sources of the Christian Sgrothen (Christian Schrot), who published around 1570 a large nine-sheet map of Palestine, this was based on various cartographical sources, collected by the Dutch astronomer, Petrus Laiksteen.
