Hogenberg Date: 1578 Size: [34 x 47 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / later handcolor Description: Original copper-engraving, handcolored in wash, published 1578 in volume I in the townbook 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' by Braun and Hogenberg. The entire series of the 'Civitates Orbis Terrarum' comprised six volumes and was published and printed from 1572 towards 1619. The townbooks by Braun & Hogenberg are probably the most important series of early city views ever published. Decorative views of five important cities in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. These views belong probably to the earliest engraved views of those cities. The great view from the sea of city of Goa is very decorative arranged with ships in front of the harbour. As well the city views of Anfa, Azimur and Diu were nicely arranged with their fortifications and city walls. Notes: In excellent condition, on the full sheet as published. German text edition verso.
