Vogt Date: 1684 Size: [50,8 x 58,5 cm] Technic: Copper-engraving / Uncolored Description: Copper-engraving, uncolored as published. Decorative early sea chart, orientated with the North to the left, published in the 'Zea Fakkel' by Joannes van Keulen around 1684. The map shows the West coast of Africa from Larache in the north towards Capo Cantin in the south, the coastline of the Maroccan coast is pretty detailed engraved showing tiny islands, bays, depths in the water and sand banks. Ornated in the upper right corner with an inset map showing the bay next to 'Nieu Sallee' with the mouth of the river Rio Rebata. In the lower left corner with a highly decorative title cartouche with allegories to the sea and to the earth, as well a mileage scale with Dutch, Spanish and English miles. The Dutch firm and printing house van Keulen was one of the most important and leading publishers for sea charts during the ending 17th century. Their firm was leading in providing charts to the Dutch East India company also their charts relating to the Americas were of high importance. Most charts were highly accurate for that period and were as well nicely ornated with decorative allegoric cartouches. Notes: In very good condition.
