Description: Original copper engraving, uncolored as published. Rare and interesting map of eastern coast of North America from Pennsylvania across Virginia and Carolina towards Florida and the Western parts of the Caribbean including Cuba, the Bahamas, Jamaica and Hispaniola. The map illustrates the famous voyage of the Dickenson family, which left Jamaica around 1696 and got ship wrecked in a storm at the east coast of Florida. They stranded near 'Jupiter island', which now about 20 miles north of West Palm Beach. Their adventurous journey continued being captured by Indians in Florida, then being released from their captivity and their long voyage ended finally in Philadelphia. The long voyage is shown and engraved on the map. The famous Dutch publisher and mapmaker Pieter Van der Aa (1659 Leiden - 1733 Leiden) published 'during the period 1682-1733, an enormous quantity of printed matter' (Koeman). This map was actually published in the first edition of his travel books 'Naauwkeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en landreysen na Oost en West-Indien', in Leiden 1706-08.

Notes: On the full sheet as published, however minor cut within the upper engraved borderline. The map was originally folded in this series, so that old folds are more or less slightly visible. In very good to excellent condition.
