Sea chart of the East coast of America with the Antilles and Brazil Title: Pascaert vande Carybes, Nieu Neder landt, Brazil, de Flaemsche en Soute Eylanden; en de landen daer ontrent gelegen 't Amsterdam Teunis Iacobsz op't Water inde Lootsman. Cartographer: Theunis, Jacobsz and Lootsman, Jacob & Casparus. Published: Amsterdam, Jacques & Gasper Anthoine Date: 1650-66 Size: [43,2 x 54 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / Uncolored Description: Rare sea chart by Jacobsz Theunis of the Northeast coast of America, the Antilles and Brazil with the entire East coast of South America. Ornated with a large decorative figurative allegoric title cartouche in the lower right corner, as well two compass roses, a ship and a whale. In the upper left corner we find a mileage scale to convert Dutch, Spanish, English & French leagues to degrees. 'this chart by Theunis Jacobsz was most probably engraved close to his death in 1650. The business was continued by his widow ... he concentrated on the waters between the Cape Verde Islands and the Azores, and removed the Gulf of Mexico. He managed to produce this on the same scale as the Spanish and Portuguese charts of the period, 1:14 million. At this scale no great improvement was made in the nomenclature; indeed New Amsterdam is identified, but the 'New' is omitted.' - Burden #298. Our example of this rare sea chart of the Americas here can be dated c. 1650-62, it was bound with a collection of sea charts by J. Theunis, the engraved title was definitely dated 1662. So it might be either earlier printed (between 1650-62) and later added to the atlas (until 1662) or it was printed around 1662 (the chart was again printed from the plate of 1650) and bound in addition to the atlas. Notes: A strong impression in excellent condition. Condition: Excellent Reference: Burden #298; Koeman vol. IV, pp. 223-6, #23. Price: /
