Maritime World Map Title: Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula Amstelaedami per F. de Wit. ex Officina R.. & I. Ottens. Cartographer: Ottens, R.. & I. [Frederick de Wit] Published: Amsterdam, Ottens Renier & Josua Date: 1745 Size: [48,2 x 56,4 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / later handcolor Description: Copper-engraving, decorative hand colored in outline and wash. A good example of this famous Dutch double hemisphere maritime world map, published first by Frederick de Wit in his sea atlas. This is the third state published 1745 by Renier & Josua Ottens. This highly decorative map is illustrated in the four corners with the following scenes: Fire - Air - Earth - Water. In the upper left corner Pluto is carrying off a female, while a battle is taking place in the background, in the upper right corner a scene of the heavens with Zeus and Hera, the bottom corners are showing a rural scene bringing in the harvest and a maritime view with a spouting whale. It shows California as an island and has outlines for Australia and New Zealand. Further it has amendments with engraved routes of earlier explorations showing the travels of Tasman, Chevalier de Chaummont and the routes of Magellan and de le Maire. There are numerous additions of islands in the Pacific and Indian Ocean. Notes: The plate is in the eastern hemisphere in Southeast Asia partly worn and the printing in that region slightly blurred. A few older tiny tears or marginal mendings, mostly in the area of the centre fold and just above the allegory of the fire. A remarkable highly decorative map still in good to very good condition.
