New England Title: Novi Belgii novaeque Angliae nec non partis Virginiae tabula multis in locis emendata a Iusto Dackers. Cartographer: Danckerts, Justus Published: Amsterdam, J. Danckerts Date: 1655 Size: [46,5 x 54,5 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / later handcolor Description: Copper engraving, hand colored in outline. This is one of the famous maps of New England, showing the East coast from South of the Chesapeake towards the St. Lawrence river in the North. The map was published by J. Danckerts for the first time from 1655 onwards. This is the second state of three with Philadelphia.' The Delaware River has been entirely redrawn. On the prototype map the river had been given two branches of almost equal importance, the westerly called the ZUYDT River and the easterly passing through a lake before both united and joined the Hudson River. Danckerts completely altered the river's course above Philadelphia making it flow in one broad stream due south from a lake which he enlarged for the purpose. In this version there is no connection between the Delaware and Hudson Rivers ...' (Tooley, p. 285) It is equipped with the famous view of 'New Amsterdam' in its earliest days. The primary aim of this famous Dutch map was to produce a detailed and informative map of the Dutch province of New Netherlands and the surrounding region. The map was ornated with a decorative floral vignettes around the title cartouche and the view of New Amsterdam. As well Indian life, probably taken from the de Bry' s voyages, was used to ornate this map. Notes: A good impression in decorative later hand color. Several skillfully carefully mended tears. However still an acceptable very good example of this rare and decorative map of New England. Condition: VG Reference: Campbell, The Jansson- Visscher Maps of New England. pp. 285/86 / #9; Price: /
