Published: Antwerpen, Platin Date: 1598 Size: [33,2 x 50,5 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / later handcolor Description: Original copper engraving, published 1598 in a French text edition of the 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum'. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. The map is ornated with a large title cartouche in the upper margin, as well we find for decoration a sea monsters and a ship in the sea. Villages and towns are shown as miniature views. A. Ortelius published this map from 1570 onwards in his 'Theatrum ...', the cartographic source of this map, was an anonymous publisher in Venice about 1560, in turn based on Gastaldi's Africa.
