Cartographer: Ortelius, Abraham Published: Antwerp, Christopher Platin Date: 1601 Size: [35,7 x 47,8 cm] Technic: Copper engraving / later handcolor Description: Original copper engraving, handcolored, published 1601 in a Latin text edition of the Atlas 'Theatrum Orbis Terrarum' at Christopher Platin in Antwerp. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. Decorative and early map of Scotland. With many details on the map, towns are shown as minature city-views, rivers, lakes and mountains are also shown on the map. The map is ornated with the title cartouche in the upper right corner, on top left of middle we find a decorative scale of milage, in the lower right corner is written the 'privilegium'. Moreover the map is ornated with ships, sea monsters and animals. A very good example in excellent condition. Notes: In very good condition. On the full sheet as published, the lower corners (outside the image of the map) with losses, so to the blank sheet at the corners another piece of paper was added. Condition: VG Reference: Broe.18.
