Description: Original copper engraving, published 1574 in the famous atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" by Abraham Ortelius. Finely hand-colored in wash and outline. The map shows a decorative title cartouche on the lower left side and the "privilegium" on the lover right corner. The corners are decorated with ornaments. Moreover the map is ornated with ships, sea monsters and animals. This is the first plate of the three plates of the Americas by Abraham Ortelius. The west coast of South America with a bulge. There were only approximately 1570 copies printed from the first plate. A highly decorative 16th century map. With many place names along the coasts. A highly decorative map.

Notes: A very good example in excellent condition and decorative handcolor. A minor carefully, nearly not visable, mending at the lower centre-fold.
