Description: Decorative handcolored woodcut map, published in the Cosmographia by Sebastian Muenster around 1575. Early and highly decorative woodcut map of Asia ornated with a large sea-monster or fish and a Neptune in the lower part of the map in the Indian Ocean. Asia is shown from the Caspian Sea and Arabia across the Indian Ocean, Sotheast Asia towards the Chinese sea. Mountains, rivers and place names are only schematic engraved on the map. The woodcut maps by Sebastian Muenster are belonging to the group of the most interesting maps, which were published in the 16th century. They were widely spread out and the Muenster's 'Cosmography' was published in several languages so that a pretty large part of the population was able to enjoy these geographical and cultural-historical illustrations.
