Incunabula world map by Hartmann Schedel
    Schedel, Hartmann

    Secunda Etas Mundi

    Nürnberg, Anton Koberger 1493
Original double page woodcut map published in the Latin text edition of the famous 'Nurnberg Chronicle', printed in Nuremberg, in July 1493. Verso illustrated with small woodcut illustrations. First Latin text edition. The 'Nurnberg Chronicle' was the earliest and most richly illustrated incunabula and description of the world, which was as well illustrated with a small number of authentic double page city views. These woodcuts were mostly cut or designed by Hanns Pleydenwurff and Michael Wolgemut. Also Albrecht Dürer did his apprenticeship in this famous Nuremberg workshop. The world map by Hartmann Schedel is one of the earliest obtainable world maps published and printed in 1493. It was just published a couple of months after the return of Christoph Columbus in March 1493 from his first voyage to the New World, however nothing of his new discoveries were included. The world map is based on Ptolemy and is surrounded by twelve windheads, further the map is supported in three of its corners with figures of the Old Testament (Ham, Shem and Japhet). 'What gives the map its present-day interest and attraction are the panels representing the outlandish creatures and beings that were thought to inhabit the furthermost parts of the earth. There are seven such scenes on the left of the map and a further fourteen on its reverse. Pliny, Pomponius Mela, Solinus and Herodotus' Fables have been the sources for many of these mythological creatures; others were doubtless born of medieval travellers' tales. Among the scenes are a six-armed man, possible based on glimpses of a file of Hindu dancers so aligned that the front figure appears to have multiple arms; a six-fingered man, a centaur, a four-eyed man from a coastal tribe in Ethiopia; a dog headed man from the Simien Mountains, a cyclops, one of the men whose heads grow beneath their shoulders, one of the crook-legged men who live in the desert and slide along instead of walking; a strange hermaphrodite, a man with one giant foot only (stated by Solinus to be used as a parasol but more likely an unfortunate sufferer from elephantisis), a man with a huge underlip (doubtless seen in Africa), a man with a waist-length hanging ears and other frightening and fanciful creatures of a world beyond' (Rodney W. Shirley - Mapping of the World #19).
    A highly decorative fine printed example of this much sought after Incunabula woodcut map of the world. In very good to excellent condition. A fine example, very well preserved. Rodney W. Shirley, Mapping of the World. #19, Pl. 25;

    world map by Plancius
    Plancius, Petrus

Orbis Terrarum Typus. De Integro Multis in Locis Ememdatus.

    Amsterdam, 1590
Copper engraving, uncolored as published. Engraved by Baptista Doetecum. Verso with Dutch text. Rare world map, first published in 1590. The map is based on Rumold Mercartor´s world map of 1587. It includes improvements, which were made by Abraham Ortelius, a re-shaped South America and includes the Salomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Plancius included new information of the Portuguese explorations on the west coast of America and the western African coast line. Japan is shown for the first time (not entirely correctly) as one small and three larger islands. This is state 3, in which Plancius's name in the title has been erased and replaced by ,D.R.M. Mathes'. It is unknown, who is represented by the initials ,D.R.M.' or whether ,Mathes' is a surname or may be an abbreviation for ,mathematician' (Shirley). 282 by 505mm (11 by 20 inches).
A very good impression, left and right margins trimmed to the engraved border line and re-margined. These repairs are skillfully done and are only visible on very close inspection. In very good condition. Shirley 177 (state 3); Schilder map 17

    De Wit's plate of 1670

    de Wit, Frederick

Nova Orbis Tabula, in Lucem Edita, A.F. de Wit.

    Amsterdam, de Wit 1670
Copper-engraving, in original hand colour (when published). A very good and sharp impression of this double hemisphere world map. The map is showing California as an Island (here with the sharp top). The map is ornated in the corners with very decorative mythological scenes. 'De Wit's map is one of the most attractive of its time. The brilliant scenes in the corners combine images of the four seasons, the elements, and the signs of the zodiac in a well balanced and naturalistic way' (Shirley p. 469). The map was published ca. 1670 in atlases by de Wit and is here present in its 1st state, before the cusps were filled with cherubs and an outer border was added. 465 by 545mm (18¼ by 21½ inches).
Verso a few minor skillfully restored splits, due of the old colors, mainly near the centre fold and near the margins. In good to very good condition. Shirley #451 (state 1 of 2).

    Valk, Gerard

Novus Planiglobii Terrestris per Utrumque Polum Conspectus. Prostant Amstelaedami Penes Gerardum Valck Calcographum in soro vulgo den Dam sub signo Ganis Excubantis Cum Privilegio.

    Amsterdam, P. Schenk 1695/1700
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash. Gerard Valk acquired this plate from the former Dutch publisher house Blaeu. The plate was probably prepared in the last years of Joan Blaeu's life, in 1672-73. 'The projection used - two north and south polar views, each extending to the equator - is not a common one and it has been suggested that Blaeu intended this special map for the Spanish edition of the Atlas Major which was never completed.' Shirley. - Further Valk made no changes to the map itself and also the amorial shield above the imprint remains blank. 40,5 x 54
