Article description
Copper-engraving, in original hand colour (when published). A very good and sharp impression of this double hemisphere world map. The map is showing California as an Island (here with the sharp top). The map is ornated in the corners with very decorative mythological scenes. 'De Wit's map is one of the most attractive of its time. The brilliant scenes in the corners combine images of the four seasons, the elements, and the signs of the zodiac in a well balanced and naturalistic way' (Shirley p. 469). The map was published ca. 1670 in atlases by de Wit and is here present in its 1st state, before the cusps were filled with cherubs and an outer border was added.
Shirley #451 (state 1 of 2).
