Article description
Copper engraving, hand colored in outline and wash, published 1657 in a Dutch bible by Aertsz van Ravesteyn. A beautiful decorative world map in two hemispheres, equipped with two circular celestial diagrams. Further two celestial spheres are displayed on the eastern hemisphere and on the western hemisphere we find eleven lines of text on the discovery of the Americas and other recent voyages and circumnavigations. California is shown on the map as a peninsula. Parts of Australia and Van Diemen's Land are shown on the map, however not the northern coastline of Australia, which was discovered by Tasman's second voyage in 1644. The four corners of the map are equipped with beautiful engraved hand colored allegories on the four continents Europa, Asia, Africa and America. These allegories are equipped with landscapes, animal life and inhabitants.
